Saint Michael's Glorious Fountain - Endowed and encouraged by papal commissions the early seventeenth century experienced a feverishly productive aesthetic outpouring from the artists residing in Rome. The flamboyant baroque style of Bernini predominated, but did not overwhelm. Among those artists who were not caught up in its spell was the Bolognese, Guido Reni. In his painting there is a yearning toward ideal perfection which looks backward to the classical style. His painting St. Michael Slaying the Devil, ca. 1626-1627 was commissioned as an altarpiece for the church of Santa Maria della Concezione in Rome where it is still to be seen. Michael had been frequently depicted in creations of art. His statue in gigantic proportions surmounts the parapet of one of Rome's greatest monuments, Castel San Angelo. The character Michael has its derivation in three religions and he always stands as the great hero - the guardian angel of the Jews; one of four archangels of Mohammed legend; the Christian leader of the band of archangels, mentioned five times in the Bible; and the representative of the church triumphant in the Roman Catholic faith. Reni's painting has served as an apt subject for statuary. The backward thrust of the wings is offset by the strong diagonal line indicated by the thrust of the sword. Although the figure is not large it has astonishing detail, achieving great power and character when placed under diagonal overhead lighting. The subject source is taken from the following Biblical passage: And there was war in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. Allow 3-4 weeks for delivery. |
